Although re-gripping is easy, as you get older it becomes a bit of a hassle. My hands get tired trying to do 13 clubs at a time and my back hurts from standing on the concrete and bending over for an hour.

I would not attempt to re-grip clubs without a bench vice myself. It makes it safer to cut the old grips off, and easier to push the new ones one. The little rubber sleeve that fits into the vice and holds the club is cheap, and most people already have the vice. If not you can get one for 20 bucks, and it will come in handy for other stuff as well.

I also use a heat gun. It makes removing the old grip tape much easier. Just a little heat on the tape and it will peel right off, many times in one piece.

As I get older, having someone do this for me is becoming more and more attractive. But at 3 bucks a club, 40 bucks is a round of golf somewhere....

The only build-up I have ever done is with my Mashie hybrid. The butt diameter of this shaft is .590 so I put a layer of masking tape under the double sided grip tape to build it up to .600 to keep a consistent feel with the rest of my clubs.

One thing to watch when installing your own grips is the size of grips you buy and the butt diameter of the shafts the you are putting the grips on. Same grip size as butt diameter will yield a standard men's grip size. If the grip size is smaller than the butt size (i.e., .580 grip size on a .600 butt shaft), it will actually yield a finished grip that is .020 oversized to standard. Opposite effect if grip size is bigger than shaft butt size (finished grip will be undersized to standard). Learned this lesson the hard way when I tried to put a standard NDMC grip (.600 grip size) on my Cleveland Classic with C. Kua shaft (.650 butt size). After struggling mightly to get the grip on the club, the finished grip was HUGE in comparison to what I am used to and what I wanted.

This is great information I didn't consider at all... thank you for sharing! Now I need to verify both for sure. I bought jumbo grips to test this go round, but I know for sure my hybrids and driver are have wider butt ends (i know i know) and I don't want to feel like I'm gripping a baseball bat. But I definitely need larger grips, I've worn out my most recent gloves from my finger nails breaking through the tips and digging into my palm, and when i warmup without a glove, my fingernails again dig into my palm far too much.

cut your fingernails, what, are you a flamenco guitarist? ha ha

Nick Faldo used to cut his fingernails on the same day each tournament week so his nails were exactly the same every week. True story.

Believe me, I cut my nails weekly.

Well I got the grips on the hybrids and driver. I'm a little concerned that I might have broken the driver shaft putting it in the vice.

Putting the grips was a lot tougher than I thought. They didn't slide very easily at all, and I was very concerned they'd get stuck halfway and I'd be in big trouble. Hopefully it's because the butt ends on those are considerably larger right?

Ugh. Making myself sick about the driver shaft.

you could always buy Pure Grips and use nuematic air to install and take off the grips! It's a synch and no more than a minute per grip to install. It's effortless and there a multiple GB nation guys using them now! Go with PureGrips and save yourself the headache. :)

Problem for me is I like three extra wraps under the right hand.... If I did this then I'd still have to go the tape and solvent route anyway....
