Firm and Fast; do you agree? 7 years 2 months ago #57818

I just read a very interesting editorial:

www.globalgolfpost.com/opinion/firm-and-...uals-long-and-wrong/

Basically, he talks about how PGA tour stops are setup with the fairways being faster than greens of the 60s and 70s, and that even though there have been great advances in equipment, course setup is what makes the Pros look even better.

I can kind of agree. He makes great points with nice little facts if you will but I'll let you read that so he can get cred for visits to his column... I assure its a worthwhile read if you've ever questioned that aspect of the pro's game!

Its hard to compare ourselves, try as we may to pros. They get free, custom fit gear, and can practice every day hours on end as it is their job. But they get setup advantages too from the course perspective that we as avg. joes likely will never see/play.

Though I know it takes a lot of talent and hard work to do what the pros do, this article made it a little more realistic IMO.

The concept and idea or notion that this is true should be very clearly confirmed for all who wonder. In fact, the LPGA Tournament that we host annually is the one time of year our course is allowed to get very firm and fast which equates to hard bounces and long roll out in fairways.

I've witnessed it first hand and was amazed at how different the course plays in those conditions.

Great topic and wonderful post! Glad you brought that up~

I don't mind fast fairways at places like Oakmont or Bethpage where the sloping fairways and tough rough can be detrimental to long run outs. Otherwise soften the fairways, eliminate the run out and harden the greens so that mid to long iron play becomes crucial again.

Check out few pics from 2011 PGA Champ: golfballed.com/index.php?option=com_kune...19&id=2137&Itemid=75

I've never seen a course with such tight fairways. I mean yes course was 8 miles long but players were getting 50-75 yards of roll out easy. With the slopes and rolling hills if you knew how fairway slope at certain distances you could eat up the yardage.

These fairways are almost like highways... hit a drive in middle and it will go bouncing down the fairway like in Tin Cup.

When you goto a PGA event and walk across the fairway, you can just feel the difference. it is soooo different and amazing. Yeah, I wish I could play only courses setup for optimal play.

Come to Portland this August. Monday following the Safeway, first group out. It's a real treat!

... And the grand stands are still up so you can pretend to be golfing in front of the gallery!

haha
